People with chronic conditions face challenges that able-bodied people cannot relate to. Often these hidden disabilities are visible to others only during acute illness or flare-ups. Chronic diseases are lifelong, people don’t get “all better,” they are managing these conditions every day of their lives. They appear free, like a mermaid, but are forever chained to the confines dictated by their disease.
The bottle used in this piece was once filled with immunoglobulin, the main treatment (often performed monthly by IV) for those with primary immunodeficiencies.
