This installation—a curtain made of linked nebulizer vials—invites viewers to reconsider how we perceive and overlook disability. At first glance, it may seem subtle, even invisible. For many, it’s easy to look past. But for those living with chronic illness, it is ever-present—a lens through which the world is experienced.
Each vial represents a moment of care, a breath fought for, a fragment of medical life rarely seen by others. The piece challenges the viewer to confront the quiet, often unseen reality of invisible disability. It asks: What do we choose not to see? Who gets to move through the world unimpeded?
This work is both barrier and window. It demands awareness of the lived experiences that persist just beyond our attention.
FROM BEHIND THE VIAL CURTAIN
Standing on one side of the curtain made from nebulizer vials, the world beyond appears both present and subtly distorted—a reflection of how invisible disability shapes perception and daily experience. Many people move quickly by, not noticing the barrier or pausing to consider its meaning; their haste echoes how easily the realities of disability are ignored or unseen. This indifference deepens the sense of separation, reinforcing the experience of being othered. And yet, the installation also quietly draws in those for whom it strikes a deeply personal chord: viewers who instantly recognize the vials as reminders of their own disability or the struggles of a loved one, whether from childhood or more recent times. These individuals approach with understanding and reflection, highlighting how this quiet barrier can hold powerful, unspoken narratives—reminding us how suddenly anyone's life might change, and how fragile the line is between observer and Other.
